Paul Bodden: Music & Lyrics

Slow Relationship

(PAUL BODDEN, vocals; SETH WEINSTEIN, piano)
Words by Vickie Varnuska, Music by Paul Bodden
I heard my friend, VICKIE VARNUSKA, recite her poem, SLOW RELATIONSHIP, during a Valentine's Day program and I thought, "That's a song lyric!"
1.
I'm involved
In a SLOW RELATIONSHIP,
A no relationship,
A going somewhere, nowhere,
Who-knows-where relationship.
I'm involved,
In and out, cat and mouse,
And all at a turtle's pace

I don't know if we'll ever be lovers
I do know we'll never be fools.
A relationship that just hovers
Doesn’t have any rules, except waiting...

He may always say "no"
He may never say "yes"
It's a fifty-fifty chance
And the game is to guess

How long to the next move?
If there is even a next move?
If there was ever a last move
And does he even know…

2.
He's involved
In a SLOW RELATIONSHIP,
A no relationship,
A going somewhere, nowhere,
Who-knows-where relationship?
Is it all resolved?
The puzzle solved cause I'm involved
And he's just looking on?

I don't know if we'll ever be lovers
I do know he's nobody's fool.
I just can't get him under the covers
He never loses his cool
And I'm waiting...

3.
So, someone's involved
In a SLOW RELATIONSHIP,
I don't know who it is.
But I’ll say one thing
That’s a sure thing,
I want to go to bed with him so bad,
And a SLOW RELATIONSHIP is no relationship
To be in when you want to be had.
